CMS Cepcor® recently supplied a new replacement bottom shell to suit a Metso® Superior 42-65 primary gyratory crusher.  What made this job unique is that the crusher bottom shell assembly weighing >30,000 Kgs was shipped by special airfreight to ensure the customers mine site minimised the risk of unplanned downtime due to fatigue cracks propagating in the original shell. 

Accepted as the genuine alternative to the original equipment manufacturer, CMS Cepcor were selected to manufacture and supply a ‘like for like’ aftermarket replacement. With such a large piece being manufactured to order it was then a race against time to get the casting and machining process complete before the shell on site failed completely. Once the production of the shell was complete and it had passed quality checks the remaining components such as bottom shell bushing and liners were fitted to complete the assembly.

A primary gyratory crusher shell is not every day air cargo and as such required special transport in the form of an Antonov AN-124-100 Ruslan; its 36m hold easily accepted the oversized bottom shell with enough space leftover for even a tracked crusher.  Second only to the massive Antonov AN-225, the AN-124-100 has a payload of 120,000 Kgs.  It has two loading entrances, at the nose and tail of the aircraft, both equipped with expanding loading ramps. For loading of non-standard cargo the cabin is equipped with two electric winches of 3 tonnes traction each and 4 electric hoists of common carrying capacity up to 30 tonnes. Having moved the shell to the Airport prior to landing of the aircraft the loading took approximately 4-5 hours with most of that time being spent on securing the load within the hold. Once airborne the shell was delivered within 24 hours.
